Overview

In this virtual practical, you will be guided to make sense of the procedures during a qualitative analysis. You will first think about the purpose of each reagent you add. You will then make observations and from which, deduce the ions present in the unknown solution.

Practical Introduction

Green solution P is a salt. Carry out the following tests on solution P.

QA Test 1: Aqueous sodium hydroxide reagent

To a portion of solution P, add aqueous sodium hydroxide until a change is seen.

QA Test 2: Aqueous silver nitrate reagent

To another portion of P, add an equal volume of aqueous silver nitrate.

QA Test 3: Aqueous barium nitrate reagent

To another portion of P, add an equal volume of aqueous barium nitrate. Leave the mixture to stand for a few minutes.
